3 Steps to Coping with Divorce

If you are going through a divorce, or perhaps you foresee a separation on the horizon, this can be a highly stressful, emotional experience. You might feel depressed, intensely emotional, and very vulnerable in this situation. Alternatively, you could be feeling liberated and happy to be moving on from this relationship.

However you are feeling, there are various techniques you can use to cope with the sometimes overwhelming situation that divorce presents. You are not alone in the situation, even if you feel it. Use these techniques to better your wellbeing and practically move forward out of the hard times.

Seek individual therapy

One way that many people cope with divorce is by seeking therapy. You might have had couple’s counselling while you were still married - and this may have been unsuccessful - but individual therapy is a totally different experience.

Therapy can help you overcome intense emotional experiences by giving you the tools you need to process your feelings. This could be breathing techniques for when you are alone, or practical advice for work or social situations when the subject of your divorce comes up.

In addition, therapy can be a powerful tool to aid your self esteem and make meaningful changes for the better. A divorce is a hard situation, but it also provides you with a clean slate to make improvements and start afresh.

  Spend more time with friends

An amazing way to get over a difficult period in your life is to spend time with people who make you feel amazing. Your oldest, best friends who know you better than anybody can help you to forget the tricky times and feel yourself once more. Spending time with friends is difficult at the moment due to the coronavirus pandemic, but you can still find ways to connect online with those you love.

    Settle your finances

One absolutely crucial aspect to coping with your divorce is to handle the necessary logistics as quickly and as smoothly as possible. With paperwork and court dates hanging over your head, it will be almost impossible to move on with your life.

Here are a few crucial aspects to settling your finances during or after a divorce.

  • Dividing your assets. As you go through the legal proceedings of a divorce, you will also need to divide your assets. You can do this amicably between yourselves, but it is also wise to speak with your divorce lawyer about this process.
  • Requesting a consent order. A clean break consent order is a legally binding process that allows any financial agreement settled between you and your ex-spouse to be legally binding. This means that if your financial situation changes in the future, you will be sure that you do not have to pay anything to your ex.
  • Pay your legal fees ASAP. Legal fees can be lengthy and expensive, but the sooner these are paid off, the sooner you can start with a totally clean slate.

Divorce is difficult, even in an amicable separation. Make sure to follow these steps if you are experiencing separation right now.
